Globally, many different etiologies contribute to liver disease, which is a severe health issue. The three most prevalent liver diseases are acute liver failure (ALF), cirrhosis, and liver cancer. The most viable treatment for severe liver disorders at the moment is liver transplantation. However, there is a persistent discrepancy between the lack of donor livers and the extreme clinical demand. Therefore, there is a critical need for novel, efficient treatments for liver diseases.

Cure Liver Cirrhosis

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have recently been suggested as an alternate method to treat liver illnesses. MSCs are described as pluripotent cells having the ability to self-renew and give rise to a variety of distinct types of differentiated mesenchymal cells.

  • Mechanism of MSC in tissue regeneration

Both basic science and clinical research have demonstrated the efficacy of stem cell treatment for liver disease. MSCs were mostly used in liver cirrhosis and had a better therapeutic outcome during the liver disease’s healing phase. Current research indicates that stem cell therapy significantly improves liver function through immunological control and anti-apoptosis. By secreting multiple immunomodulatory factors, MSC can differentiate into hepatocytes in vivo and have a crucial therapeutic function in the treatment of liver fibrosis.

  • Application of MSCs in Acute Liver Failure

ALF developed quickly in the clinical setting while presenting poorly for medical care. The frequency of liver failure brought on by herbal therapy has dramatically grown in recent years. The use of MSCs in treating ALF animal models has been supported by numerous research. MSCs have been shown to increase hepatocyte proliferation, suppress hepatocyte death, and improve liver functioning. Previous research has shown MSCs’ immunoregulation-based therapeutic efficacy in ALF. First, by controlling inflammatory cytokine levels, MSCs can reduce inflammation and liver damage. The use of MSCs in ALF is now restricted to basic research. But MSCs can inhibit inflammation while supporting liver regeneration.

  • Application of MSCs in Liver Cirrhosis

Liver cirrhosis is a chronic condition with many different etiologies, such as viral infection, pharmacological side effects, alcoholism, and immune disorders. Chronic liver damage triggers hepatocyte death, inflammation, and repeated damage repair cycles, which result in excessive extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition. The final stage of increasing fibrosis without adequate, all-encompassing medical care is liver cirrhosis. MSCs can differentiate into hepatocyte-like cells and secrete substances that control the immune system. MSCs thus, take a direct and indirect strategy to contribute to tissue repair. A few clinical trials have been carried out to assess the efficacy of MSCs in the treatment of liver diseases.

More methods are now being developed to improve the outcomes of stem cell therapy in the treatment of liver cirrhosis as a result of advancements in biomedical science. It has been claimed that MSCs can avoid undesired differentiation by being enclosed in microspheres, and that liver-specific receptors can improve stem cell homing for therapeutic purposes. To further highlight the efficacy of stem cell therapy, genome editing methods and induced pluripotent stem cell technologies are rapidly gaining ground.

With the development of new technology, numerous stem cell clinics for the treatment of liver cirrhosis are emerging, and regenerative therapy for liver cirrhosis is raising medical awareness on a global scale in an effort to minimize liver transplant complications.
